I study the molecular evolution and epidemiology of RNA and DNA viruses that cause human and animal diseases. My present research focuses on human, avian and swine influenza. I am investigating the evolutionary forces and environmental factors that drive the continuous circulation of H5N1 highly-pathogenic avian influenza in Asia and the Middle East. I am also studying whether the transmission of low-pathogenicity avian influenza in wild birds can be explained by their migration pathways. I aim to identify the adaptation that may underlie viral emergence in new host populations by comparative analyses of influenza genomes.

I also work on several other viruses, including HIV-1, dengue virus, adenoviruses, enterovirus-71, noroviruses, infectious bursal disease virus, infectious salmon anaemia virus, SARS coronavirus, rabies virus, PRRSV, porcine circovirus and the West Nile virus. I am interested in the evolutionary biology and comparative genomics of other organisms, such as the giant panda and the tubercles bacillus.
