Coming from clinical and field epidemiology background, I joined the group because of my interest in applying evolutionary thinking in addressing disease research problems. Currently I pursue this interest by studying the evolution of hepatitis C virus as a means to understand its transmission and migration patterns, ability to evade the host immune response as well as infer the virus’ epidemiological history prior to its discovery in 1989. After a project addressing the mystery of the endemic transmission mechanisms of the virus and two more focussing on phylogeography and epidemic history in South-East Asia and West Africa I now examine the adaptation of the virus to the HLA I alleles in human populations using a combination of statistical and phylogenetic approaches.
